High performance is about forming habits to help you excel in work while still enriching other areas of your life at the same time.
High Performance is defined as succeeding beyond standard norms, consistently over the long-term while maintaining well-being and positive relationships.
The high-performance approach to success extends beyond other popular concepts such as ‘focusing on your strengths’ and ‘putting in your 10,000 hours’. I’m sure you can think of lots of people who have tremendous personal strengths who may even be successful – but they have destroyed their health or damaged relationships in their pursuit of success.
That is not success, is it?
True success means also having a healthy life, full of vibrancy, joy and positive relationships – it’s more about thriving in your pursuits than the stress and sacrifice of just striving.
As a Certified High Performance Coach I follow a framework designed by Brendon Burchard based on the study done by the High Performance Institute to help achievers thrive in all areas of their life.
The study set out to answer 3 main questions:
“Why is it that some people succeed more quickly than others and sustain that success over the long term?”
“Of those who find success, why are some miserable and others happy on their journey?”
“What motivates some people to reach for higher levels of success in the first place, and what kinds of habits, training, and support help them continue on and improve over time?”
They measured data analytics from millions of people and collected over one million high performance assessment data points.
All the data was compared to academic literature along with Coaching insights from over 60,000 high performance coaching sessions.
They were able to narrow down to 100 different performance variables.
Of these, researchers wanted to pinpoint- which performance variables help people achieve long term success THE MOST ?
They found that high performers consistently have mastered 6 habits either on purpose or out of necessity, known as high performance habits:
1) CLARITY: high performers regularly seek clarity about who they are and what they want to achieve any why.
2) ENERGY: they consistently generate the energy sufficient to maintain their effort towards success.
3) NECESSITY: high performers make sure that they are constantly raising the bar of their own motivation. They need to know their “why” and it drives them, for the right reasons. To them, success is necessary, for meaningful and internal reasons, not external.
4) PRODUCTIVITY: they are very productive, most importantly they focus on the things that mattered the most for them, limiting distractions and often working in ‘flow’.
5) INFLUENCE: high performers know how to develop influence with other people around them and the importance of harmonious relationships in their pursuits.
6) COURAGE: and finally, in the face of unavoidable fear high performers demonstrate courage. They may still have similar fear as us all, but they chose to face them and overcome their fears in their quest for greatness.
The good news is, high performance was found to be based on habits that you can cultivate.
Anyone can.
